The challenge for water pipe systems in the 2lst Century is addressed. Factors influencing the change process in meeting the challenge are identified and explored. It is noted that, whilst construction of new water pipe systems will continue to be important major effort will need to be expanded in relation to the existing pipeline infrastructure. The management and technical challenges posed are examined from a broad viewpoint. Finally, several key trends such as increased emphasis on the selection of materials, trenchless technology and total quality management are highlighted.
