The damage of PVC pipes caused by the great earthquakes was investigated in Japan by various organizations including public and private institutions. As a result of these investigations it is found that high-impact modified PVC pipes with the long insertion length have the least failures. Moreover it is also reported that the pulling out of the joints in liquefaction areas were the most dominant failure. Furthermore, we evaluated the performance of PVC pipes installed more than 40 years ago. In this paper we present the differences in the damages on PVC pipes caused by the great earthquakes and also the evaluation results on PVC pipes used for a long time.
