Characterisation of Blue MDPE Water Pipe [PE]

Plastic Pipes Conference Association # 1988 Bath

Mallison, Gwynn

BP Chemicals International together with Stewarts and Lloyds Plastics have provided Rigidex PC 002-50 R968 pipes for the WRC project studying rapid fracture, fatigue and ageing characteristics of MDPE.
The production and characterisation of the pipes and compound are discussed. In particular the residual stress, surface quality and_ stress rupture performance of pipe are examined.

LDPE pressure pipes have been used for more than 30 years in the UK for small diameter water services. However, Since 1982 a more modern MDPE material originally developed for the Gas Industry has been introduced with characteristic blue colouration for identification of potable water pipes underground.

1992 Eindhoven : The Cooling Phase of Large Pipe Manufacture

Author(s) : Pittman, Whitman, Gwynn, Beech

Comprehensive operating data from a large-scale pipe cooling lime are reported, including in-situ measurements of temperatures within the pipe wall. A finite element simulation of cooling, coupled with gravity induced flow, or slump, in the pipe wall is described. Computed temperatures within the wall are compared...
