Ultrasonic and radiographic methods were used up to now to locate discontinuities in materials. The author shows that it is also possible to determine other factors which have an adverse effect on quality. A num- ber of conditions are discussed which exert an influence on the strain of materials It is shown that the strain behaviour of welded joints is a feature suitable to describe the quality of such joints. Methods used for determining strain and the quality assessments archie- ved by such methods are described. The results show that high-quality welded joints exhibit minor local strain in the weld.

Plastic pipes have been utilized in the Australian gas distribution network since the early 1970s. The most common plastic type found in Australia is polyethylene (PE), although nylon is extensively used in New South Wales. Early installation of PE pipe was completed using the first generation high density type PE50...

The replacement of fossil fuels like natural gas by sustainable gases such as biogas and hydrogen can mitigate global warming. There has been some debate about the impact of sustainable gases on the materials used in the gas grid. An extensive study of the behaviour of PE, PVC, POM and rubber materials was therefore...

Normal High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is commonly used as the fluid contacting element, or the “inner-liner”, in Reinforced Thermoplastic Pipes (RTP) and steel pipes up to 65 ºC. Through a modification of the HDPE polymer matrix, by adding nanoparticles, the E-modulus can be increased. Research shows that...

New standards in Italy legally require that chlorine dioxide is used as a disinfectant in any new installation that treat water for human consumption. Chlorine dioxide is preferred to other disinfectants when surface water or water from rivers is used for drinking water supply and particularly Southern European...

In the ultimate field environment for testing polyethylene (PE) gas pipe, New Mexico Gas Company initiated an internal evaluation of bimodal PE4710 pipe in 2005. These extensive laboratory and field evaluations were vitally important to ensure that the material could be easily fused to the existing pipe network and in...

One of the most critical points in the design of a material with long term high burst pressure performance is to limit the so called "brittle failure", where slow crack growth propagation mode takes place. Since many years, polypropylene has been produced via cascade processes, where different PP based structures are...

Polybutene-1 (PB-1) is a relatively unexplored polyolefin which shares many features in common with conventional polyolefins like polypropylene and polyethylene, while at the same time offering versatility, value and opportunity through a range of properties not usually associated with this type of resin. Pipes made...

The cost benefits of thin walled MDPE pipe systems for the rehabilitation of gas and water mains are significant. However, the key short-term factor in making decisions about rehabilitation and replacement choices is often the initial cost of the work, rather than the total cost of ownership. The various spray-applied...

The systems reviewed below refer predominantly to the use of PE pipe, as this is the material of choice for many of the applications described. Recent developments in other pipeline materials have introduced the possibility of using alternatives to PE in these applications where there is a cost-benefit of doing so....

Because pipes are submitted to cyclic stresses in the UEWS test, this method offers some advantages over the standard long term burst pressure test. Clear transition points between elastic and inelastic regions of the stress-strain curve can be identified. These transition points are a sound basis for the...
