Longitudinal crack in large PVC-U pressure pipes. pipe gelation influence

Three typical case study of longitudinal cracks found in large dimension PVC-u pipes installed in Spanish irrigation networks are presented for discussion. Gelation level of those pipes using EN-ISO 1452-2 alternative test methods DCM, DSC and Tensile test has been evaluated.

Irrigation networks in Spain extensively makes use of plastic pressure pipes systems. Some recent failures focus the attention on Rapid Crack Propagation phenomena. Large high pressure PVC-u pipes are involved in most of incidences detected. Level of gelation of those pipes using EN-ISO 1452-2 alternative test methods DCM, DSC and Tensile test has been evaluated. Influence of poor gelation in those failures was clearly evidenced.

In the last years several incidences related with longitudinal cracks were found in large dimension PVC-u pressure pipes according EN-ISO1452 series standard. Some of those pipes were investigated in CEIS to check their compliance with degree of gelation requirements and alternative test (Tensile test, and ‘onset’ temperature by DSC) included in the standard. Typical case studies were presented for discussion.
