Safe operation of Transco's gas distribution system depends upon an ongoing policy to replace cast iron mains with polyethelene pipe. Minimal excavation techniqlles can ensure that this work is carried out in a cost effective manner. Research and development of techniques to achieve this objective are key to Transco's success. This paper describes the development of a mains refurbishment technique utilising cross linked polyethelene. The success of the technique-being due to a partnership involving Transco, BG Technology.
