Fracture Propagation in Plastics Pipes

Vancombrugge

Fundamentals # 1982 York

Formation and propagation of brittle fracture as a function of internal pressure and temperature. Information about crack propagation speed. Discussion about influence of residual stresses.

A number of brittle failures have been reported in water- and gas-distribution networks. Most failures occured in P.V.C. pipes. the failure extended over a pipe length [6 to 10 meters1 up to the fitting. Some brittle failures of P.E. pipes have also been reported in water- and gas-distribution, no details of this fractures were published.

The questions to be solved are :

  • How and why does a crack initiate
  • How and why does the crack propagates
