The ultimate reliability of the data generated on tests, both static and dynamic, on "notched" plastic pipes samples is cmcially dependent upon the perfection of the actual notch root and the material immediately surrounding it. This paper d d e r s a number of the important factors relating to the production of the now widely used "Vee" notch, generated by a multi-toothed 60" milling cutter, but in most respects to other methods also. However, the reality is, as with effectively all other aspect of testing these ostensibly simple materials, that the mechmkms are far from simple and are still not fully understood. This paper considers sample preparation further, thereby contributing to the greater understanding of these complex processes.
