Plastics Pipes Underground # 1970 Southampton
The pricipal plastics materials used for the distribution of potable water supplies in this comtry are uPVC and polythene. uPVC is now available in pipe sizes up to 24 in. and its use in the UK has increased rapidly since the first pipe of this material was laid in 1958. Polythene pipes have been used for rather longer but their application to water supply is mainly restricted to service pipes of small diameter.
This paper will refer to experiences with upvc. The advantages of these materials for water supply pipes are well known and have been fully discussed elsewhere.
