PE-UHMW pipes standard and application in China are introduced. In this study, the tensile properties, charpy impact strength and abrasion characteristics of PE-UHMW pipes were investigated. These results demonstrate the excellent properties of PEUHMW pipes. A novel method of testing melt flow rate was also proposed.
Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (PE-UHMW) pipes have excellent abrasion resistance and impact resistance properties. They possess special advantages in the transportation of coal water slurry, dry-mixed mortar, powder as well as granular solid and in the applications of oil drilling. The PE-UHMW pipes with good chemical and heat resistance can be also used for the transportation of chemical products. This study introduces the PE-UHMW pipe standard in China, which classifies the pipes based on the viscosity number (or molecular weight). The tensile properties and charpy impact strength of dual notched sample are discussed. Besides, both mass and wall thickness methods for abrasion resistance evaluation in the form of pipe are introduced, and the results nicely distinguish PE-UHMW from PE100 pipes. We studied the testing method of the melt flow rate (MVR and MFR) with a change in the inner diameter of the die. With the new die and testing condition, MVR (MFR) values were less than 0.200 cm3 /10min (g/10min) for PE-UHMW I pipe, less than 0.100 cm3 /10min (g/10min) for PEUHMW II and PE-UHMW III pipes, and less than 0.300 cm3 /10min (g/10min) for PE-UHMW III (special compound) pipes, respectively. At the same condition, the MVR was 38.1 cm3 /10min for the HDPE (MW= 380,000).
