Bi-oriented PVC (PVC-O) pipes are increasingly installed on a worldwide basis for drinking water applications. This is due to the outstanding mechanical properties of PVC-O pipes, such as high strength and high ductility. Furthermore bi-oriented PVC pipes are light weight, flexible and have a low carbon footprint and an excellent resistance to slow crack growth.

In the first part of this paper the history and mechanical properties of PVC-O pipes are discussed.

Secondly the process of manufacturing bi-oriented PVC pipes and the development of bi-oriented PVC pipe in material class MRS50 will be highlighted. As bi-oriented PVC pipe in higher MRSvalues is becoming available, applications in pressure classes of 20 and 25 bar are also becoming more feasible.

Thirdly, existing and newly developed concepts of tensile resistant couplers will be presented. In this paper, special attention is given to a patented full PVC tensile resistant coupler innovation.

Lastly two bi-oriented PVC pipelines projects in the Netherlands will be discussed.
